Specter of the Past by Timothy Zahn Star Wars
I LOVE ZAHN'S STAR WARS BOOKS! Seriously, he's the one who really got me into reading Star Wars books and now that I'm reading another of his (finally!) I remember how much I love him. I mean, who else is going to talk about the 'psychological presence of TIE fighters' and give Luke a moral debate on whether or not becoming too powerful in the Force is another path leading to the Dark Side?!

 Battlefront: Twilight Company by Anthony Freed Star Wars (audio)
Still enjoying this, and almost finished too. *fist pump*

 What I Read: 

The Best Blades Star Wars: Clone Wars, vol 5
One thing I love about the Clone Wars -in all of its incarnations- is the variety of stories, characters, and genres. This one has a lot more stories about shady politics and the Jedi morals in the face of the war, which I found pretty interesting. The shady politics aspect of the Star Wars universe works a lot better in small doses like this, in my humble opinion. I may be misremembering, but I recall a lot of politics in the prequels, and a lot that I had a hard time grasping when I was younger.

 Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman
Interesting book of essays from 1984 about Postman's observations and predictions on how television will effect us, our society, our thought processes, education, and the way the world works in general.

 Nothing Left to Lose by Dan Wells John Cleaver #6
One of my Most Anticipated Books of 2017, this book is wonderful, creepy, amazing, and the perfect ending to a series but I can't really talk about it because I decided (a long time ago) that these reviews would be my comeback video reviews so I've been saving them. Now that that time is drawing closer, I can't back out of that plan now, can I?!

 Internet Shenanigans 

Last week (I think it was Friday) the Google doodle of the day was a celebration of Victor Hugo, which was a bit of a coincidence for me, because just the night before I discovered a cover of 'Hellfire' from the Disney adaptation I hadn't seen before.

 Okay, to call it a 'cover' is a bit of a stretch. It was 'Google Translate Sings: Hellfire' from Malinda Kathleen Reese's channel, featuring Jonathan Young. Now, I'm a big Jonathan Young fan, which I may have mentioned; I love his Disney covers, but his (serious) cover of 'Hellfire' is one of his best and definitely THE best version of the song I've heard. Go listen to it. Right now. And then come back.

 So of course I had to watch the Google Translate version. It did not disappoint.


 Back to the Victor Hugo Google doodle. (whew. Say that ten times fast.) I jumped over to the 'learn more' section Google provided and discovered that Victor Huge lived on -and loved!- Guernsey! Of all places, Guernsey island! Of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society fame!

 In Real Life 

I've been talking about how I'm going to start my YouTube channel back up again and, well, that's still the plan. And it just kicked into overdrive -in a slightly different direction.

 I've just signed up for Jumpcut Academy to learn more about how to successfully use YouTube!

 I'm very excited about this! And nervous. I'm both. Definitely. I'm really happy to get back into YouTube, but even happier having a resource now that will help me understand it all better. I don't know how this will effect my plan to start posting videos by August, so that's in limbo for the moment. This is going to be a huge commitment on my part, but the goal is to NOT let the blog suffer for it. I'll still be posting at least once a week here, more when I can.

 I can't wait to see where this takes me! ^_^
Also CAMP NANOWRIMO!!!

This is the most I've written in such a short span of time in a very long time! And so far, I love the progress I'm making story-wise too. <3 I'm only writing every other day, so hopefully I can keep up the pace!

Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague by Brandon Mull page 165/473
So much fun! I've forgotten just how much I enjoy this series. I've also forgotten a lot of details, so that adds to the fun. I've totally forgotten when Patton Burgess plays a major role and that's one of my favorite parts, so I'm eagerly awaiting that. ^_^

Heartless by Marissa Meyer disc 11/12
Almost finished with it. Going back and forth on this one, since the main focus of the story is a love triangle and I really dislike love triangles. :P

The Horizontal Man by Michael Dahl page 52/182
Took a break from this when I realized I had a deadline for the Fablehavens, but next week.

 What I Read: 



 Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star by Brandon Mull
Again, forgot so many details! So far, this one has been the most fun to reread, but I've got a feeling each successive one will be better than the last.

 I'm now 3/19 on my Take Control Control of Your TBR Challenge.
What? That's more books total than last update? Yeah. Yeah, that's because I miscounted. And also forgot about my book club read for April, The Lake House by Kate Morton. I should at least start that this month, or I'll never finish it in time.

 The good news is, I now have a deadline to finish all the Fablehaven books by and I'm breezing through those faster now at 12.5 chapters a day, so I should wrap those up soon. Then I can move on to the rest of the list.

 I'm still doomed, but at least now I have the semblance of a plan.

 Internet Shenanigans 


 Other than putting together a pretty epic Spotify list for motivation -I'm super obsessed with Disney and other movies covers right now- I've been too busy writing and reading for any Internet Shenanigans. Sorry, dudes.

 EDIT: Totally lied! The new Postmodern Jukebox song is AMAZING, you guys! Sara Niemietz is fantastic, once again.



 New Additions

 What I'm Reading 

Beauty by Robin McKinley
I've tried reading this book twice before, but could never get past the first three pages. Not a great hook. It's a really slow beginning but two friends have recommended this, so I'm going to push through.

 Heartless by Marissa Meyer (audiobook)
The Queen of Hearts and I have some bad history. She threatened to chop off my head and I had nightmares. But I admit, this 'origin' story by the Lunar Chronicles author is very interesting, mostly because our future hothead is such a sweet, mellow girl. Every once in a while, though, she loses her cool and I start to see that terrifying woman.

In Such Good Company by Carol Burnett
I used to think I didn't like nonfiction but lately I've come to realize that I don't like dry nonfiction. Just like with fiction, I prefer my nonfiction books to have palatable personality, so I'm moving into memoirs.

 In Real Life 

I spent four dollars in the 'Retrocade' section of a local arcade. We're talking Asteroids, Centipede, Galaga, Q*bert, Ms. Pac Man, Donkey Kong, and Dig Dug. The whole time I felt like I was living in Pixels or Ready Player One. Plus, I totally managed to enter Level 3 on Q*bert. Since I don't easily pick up on video games, this is definitely a win. Next time I'm taking more money. I must ensure my name stays on the scoreboard.

 New Additions 

I'm watching my spending right now, but I did purchase a copy of 84, Charing Cross Road by Helene Hanff and, yes, it's gorgeous.

 Random 

Found this last week. Completely adore it. I'm already going through The Blacklist withdrawals so until it returns April 20, you can expect to see plenty more of this guy around here.

 Okay, so this will be awesome because it's nearly as long of a list as the last time I posted one of these. You know that old adage, So Many Books, So Little Time? Yeah. Right here.

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden

Arden's debut novel about Russian folklore and fairy tales it's absolutely GORGEOUS. I gave this book 4/5 stars and can't wait for the two sequels promised by the author.

This isn't something I would have picked up for myself, but it was actually pretty good.

The Blacklist: The Beekeeper No. 159 by Steve Piziks

I'm always wary of tie-in novels because they tend to either be horrible or mediocre, but I could not resist a novel for The Blacklist. And this one is actually good!

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab | Audiobook
4/5 stars | PG-13 for swearing and sexual references
Schwab writes fascinating characters. Victor Vale and the rest of her Vicious cast completely captivated me and I'm glad to see it wasn't a fluke. Kell and Lilah are great dual main characters supported by a cast of equally interesting supporting characters, though I admit Kell is the more fascinating of the pair. I also love the worldbuilding and the magic system at play -a series of different Londons in different realities, some with and some without magic. I can't wait to read the next one.

 One Punch: Vol 1 by ONE
3.5/5 stars | comics mini review wrap up to post Feb 13
I watched the first episode of the anime awhile back and I thought it was hysterical. My sister discovered our library carries the manga, so I snagged it from her.

It's going to be another full month of reading because I hit the library again.

I'm almost finished with this one! I had to switch from audio to book because the discs were damaged, which is why it's taking longer. :P

High priority ARC read!

I'm maybe...a quarter of the way through this? I also had to switch from the audio to the book, so there's no guarantee I can finish it. :P

Gotta confess, I've already started this and I love it. ^_^

My current audiobook. We'll see how far I get before I can't renew it.

And because I'm a glutton for punishment, I went crazy with my library card again...

I ADORE her book Wildwood Dancing and can't believe it's taken me so long to try another of her works.

Confession: I've read the first three pages of this book a few times already and have never been compelled to go farther. I'm trying it again because it's a friend's favorite and, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm in a Beauty and the Beast retelling mood.

So far, my satisfaction with this series has been fair to middling. I keep reading them because they keep getting a little better, the twists a little more interesting -and this one sounds like it's going to be the BEST YET. *crosses fingers*

I'm going to be honest. I didn't even list all the books I've got piled up right now. These are just the ones I most hope to get through this month.

It's Monday! Here's What I'm Reading...

What I Read Last Week:
I've somehow fallen into this deplorable habit lately of starting half a dozen books and audiobooks all at once and I haven't finished any of them yet. But I guess there was one thing I finished...

 Avatar: The Last Airbender -Smoke and Shadow, parts 1-3 by Gene Luen Yang

Gotta admit, I loved a lot about this trilogy. The Avatar comics have been rather touch and go with me since the beginning, but I must say they're improving. Smoke and Shadow is probably my favorite of all to date, but let's leave the review for later, shall we?

An ARC from Netgalley that I am thoroughly enjoying, albeit a little slowly. Savoring. That's what I'd doing. Savoring.

 The Green Man edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling
After reading their anthology The Faery Reel, I knew I had to read this one about the elusive 'Green Man' of mythology, which happens to be a topic of research at the moment.

The Last Gunfight: The Real Story of the Shootout at the O.K. Corral -And How It Changed the American West by Jeff Guinn
I have a mental list of books at my library that I need to read. They don't always make it onto my Goodreads TBR, but whenever I walk past their shelves, I get a reminder. This has been on that mental list for the better part of four years. I don't have a great track record with nonfiction, but I'm very interested in Old West history, so we'll see.

The Man With No Name by Frostfyre7
Okay, yes, this is a fanfiction. But it's a freaking amazing and totally believable Firefly/Doctor Who crossover and it is spectacular. Seriously.
You should go read it.

I'm so excited about it I even made an appropriate YouTube playlist.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
I read this a few years ago and I didn't remember enjoying it all that much. At least, I swear I read it a few years ago. It's a favorite of a friend of mine so I decided to give it another go and -you know what? I don't think I actually finished it the first time around. Because I don't remember Fae in this story at all. Or magic. And you know what else? I really, really like it!

 Elantris by Brandon Sanderson
I felt like I was well-read in Sanderson until I realized Mistborn: Final Empire was the only Cosmere novel I've read. Might as well start at the beginning! As always, fascinating and elaborate and captivating.

 A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab
This has been on my TBR forever and I found this on my library's Overdrive. I love that, because I can put it onto my MP3 and listen when I can. I'm *almost* finished with it and I'm loving it.

 What I read last week:
The Devil's Only Friend by Dan Wells
This is book four in the John Cleaver series and, yeah, I'm in love. This concept/genre is so not up my alley I almost didn't pick up the first book -I Am Not A Serial Killer- but I'm glad I did. IT'S SO GOOD. Review to come.

 Original Sin #2 by Jason Aaron
This Marvel comic is on my Fall TBR, so *score*.

 The Rocketeer #1 by Dave Stevens
OHMYGOSH I'M SO EXCITED I FOUND THIS! I loooove the movie and I've wanted to read the comic for ages and I just stumbled across it at my library. LOVE IT.

 What I'm currently reading:

 Over Your Dead Body by Dan Wells
Book five of the John Cleaver series and I don't have the heart to fly through it in a night like I did the other four. Don't get me wrong; I love it! But it's also a fairly recent release so even if it doesn't turn out to be the last book in the series (I have no idea; kind of dreading looking it up), I'll have a long wait for the next one.

 Dracula by Bram Stoker
This is my book club's pick this month and, oh gee, look at that, book club date draws nigh! I'm actually excited to read this, because it's one I never thought I would, but I've recently been getting into the 'Silver Scream' favorites.

The Faerie Reel: Tales from the Twilight Realm edited by Ellen Datlow
An anthology of short stories regarding the Otherworld and fairy folk. So far, I like it, and it helps get me into the mood for my current work in progress. Bonus!

The Fire Rose by Mercedes Lackey
Another from my Fall TBR, it's both a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which I'm trying to read a ton of before March, and it's ground zero for Lackey's Elemental Masters series which has been on the back of my TBR for awhile.

 Desolate Angel by Chaz McGee
I've heard very mixed reviews on this mystery series whose main character is a dead detective, but I snuck the first chapter in before work one day and I'm so excited to read it.




Did you notice that only one of my current titles in from my Fall TBR? I sure did. I'm going to be redoing that tomorrow.
